About 2.72 million Johoreans are eligible to choose a new state government from 172 candidates fighting across all 56 seats
With an electorate of more than 2.7 million, Johor has been turned into a battle ground between partners who insist their pact in Putrajaya can withstand the rancour on the ground.
Voters across 1,076 polling centres will choose a new state government from 172 candidates contesting all 56 seats.
Dominant coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) and Anwar’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) fielded candidates in every constituency, despite sitting together in the federal government.
Fourteen seats have straight fights, 27 feature three-cornered contests, 12 are four-way battles and three have five candidates.
BN entered polling day defending the 40 seats it held before the state assembly was dissolved on June 1, while PH had 12, opposition Perikatan Nasional three and youth-centric Muda one.
A simple majority requires 29 seats and a two-thirds majority needs 38.
