The individual issued an apology and stated that he had stepped down from his position after a widely shared video captured him tugging at the outer edges of his eyes during a game in Guadalajara.
Ulises Fernando Bernal Miramontes faced backlash following a video posted by South Korean social media personality Yoon Su-jin, which showed him making the gesture of pulling at the corners of his eyes—a move considered offensive to people of Asian heritage.
Yoon shared the footage with the caption: “POV: When you experienced racism at the World Cup.”
“I traveled all the way to Mexico for the World Cup, but … am I overreacting?” she wrote in Korean.
The clip quickly drew strong condemnation and widespread criticism online. Several commenters who identified as Mexican replied to Yoon’s post, saying: “That guy doesn’t represent us Mexicans,” “As a fellow Mexican, I feel embarrassed,” and “I apologize on his behalf.”
