US Senator Mitch McConnell was taken to the hospital on Sunday, according to his spokesman, though no information was immediately available about the reason for his admission or his outlook.
McConnell, 84, served as Senate leader for longer than anyone in history before stepping down from that position while completing his final term, which concludes in January.
"Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care," spokesman David Popp said in a statement offering no additional details. It was not immediately known whether the Kentucky lawmaker was in Washington, his home state, or somewhere else.
McConnell was hospitalized earlier this year for eight days in February due to "flu-like symptoms."
The lawmaker's health has been under close observation for several years.
He fell and sprained his wrist while leaving a Republican lunch in December 2024. He was hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 and missed several weeks of work after a fall at a Washington hotel. Upon his return, he froze twice during press conferences that summer, staring blankly ahead until colleagues and staff came to assist him.
